The new 10-acre Children’s Hospital will feature environmentally “green” technology, a research center, a power plant, parking garages, and an outdoor garden.

We’re delighted to have Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh join us as our new neighbor! Construction is underway on Children’s Hospital’s new, state-of-the-art, comprehensive pediatric health care campus. When the new Children’s Hospital opens in 2008, it will bring with it some 150,000 patients plus about 3,000 staff people—creating a new dynamic that will help to infuse a new, vibrant atmosphere into the community.

The new Children’s Hospital — one of the first hospitals in the nation incorporating environmentally “green” technology — will sit on a 10-acre, campus-like setting, opening its front doors to Penn Avenue. Incorporating air filtration systems that lower emissions, water fixtures that reduce water use and waste management that reduces the amount of solid waste in landfills, the new hospital will have private rooms for patients who can look out onto Pittsburgh’s extraordinary skyline.

The 1.3 million-square-foot campus includes the construction of the hospital, research center, a power plant, and parking garages. In November 2005, Children’s Hospital approved new additions, including: an 800-space staff parking garage; expanded faculty and administrative/clinical space; onsite day care; a fitness center; and an outdoor garden. In addition, due to aggressive recruitment of pediatric researchers, two floors in the pediatric research facility that were originally planned to be shelled laboratory space now will be completed.
